Loading a Truck Bed or Trailer: 5 Key Steps
Whether you're hauling materials to a job site or transporting equipment across town, the way you load your truck or trailer plays a big role in safety, efficiency, and vehicle performance. At PV Rentals, we’ve seen what happens when loads are done right—and what happens when they’re not.
Here are a few practical tips to help your team stay safe and get the job done without unexpected setbacks.
1. Distribute Weight Evenly
Uneven loads can cause serious issues on the road. Keep heavier items centered between the axles and as low as possible. Shifting weight affects handling and increases the risk of trailer sway or rollovers—especially at highway speeds or during sharp turns.
Pro Tip: When using a trailer, aim for about 60% of the weight in front of the axle and 40% behind. This helps maintain proper tongue weight and towing stability.
2. Secure Every Load
Even a short drive can turn into a hazard if your cargo shifts. Use ratchet straps, tie-downs, bungee cords, or cargo nets to keep items in place. Loose tools or supplies not only risk damage—they become dangerous projectiles during sudden stops.
Reminder: Always double-check tie-downs before hitting the road. A few extra minutes can prevent a costly accident.
3. Know Your Payload & Towing Limits
Every vehicle has a maximum payload and towing capacity. Exceeding those numbers can strain the suspension, wear out the brakes, and put everyone at risk. Before loading up, check the specs for the vehicle you're using—especially if it's rented.
Don't let this be you!
At PV Rentals, we make this easy by clearly marking load capacity on all rental vehicles. Need help choosing the right size truck or trailer? Just ask—our team is here to match the right vehicle to your job.
4. Maintain Visibility
It’s easy to overlook—but always ensure your load isn’t blocking your side mirrors, taillights, or license plate. Visibility is key for safety, especially when backing up or navigating tight spaces. If anything obstructs your line of sight, readjust or use extended mirror attachments.
5. Perform a Pre-Trip Walkaround
Before every trip, take 2 minutes to check:
-
That the load is secured and balanced
-
All straps are tight and in good condition
-
The trailer hitch is locked in and safety chains are connected
-
Brake lights, turn signals, and tires are in good shape
A quick check now can save hours of downtime later.
